StarFabric Trade Association Announces Eighteen New Members

Industry Group Chartered to Enhance and Promote StarFabric Interconnect Technology for Distributed Embedded and Communication Applications

Boston, MA, 13 May 2002 - The StarFabric Trade Association today announced the addition of eighteen founding members. The Trade Association, a non-profit, open membership industry group, was created to develop and promote the StarFabric switched interconnect technology. The founding members represent a wide range of organizations, which together provide the broad and diverse perspective required to ensure StarFabric will continue to meet the dynamic market requirements of next generation embedded and communication equipment.

The StarFabric Trade Association founding members now include: Agere Systems, Artela Systems, Aurora Technologies, Inc., Axiowave Networks, Inc., Bustronic Corp., Communication Automation Corp., Dolphin Interconnect Solutions, Dy4 Systems, Fairchild Semiconductor, Hybicon Corp., IBUS-Phoenix, Iskratel, ITOX, Kaparel Corporation, K.K. Rocky, NMS Communications, Parsec Holdings, PCI Automation, Inc., Siemens AG, StarGen, Inc., SVA Networks, Inc., Synergy MicroSystems, Inc., and Unique Memec.

StarFabric, originally developed by StarGen, Inc. (a fabless semiconductor company) with the assistance of the StarFabric Working Group, is a high-speed, point-to-point switched interconnect technology for backplane and chassis-to-chassis interconnects. It is a low-cost, easy to implement, scalable, high-availability solution, ideal for a wide range of communication and embedded systems, based on peer-to-peer distributed computing. It can be used to enhance or replace existing bus-based interconnect solutions. StarFabric-compliant products are shipping now, including semiconductors, software, building blocks, and complete systems from numerous vendors.

The Trade Association members will work with the PCI Industrial Manufacturers Group (PICMG) to develop appropriate system-level specifications for open platforms using StarFabric. The PICMG 2.17 CompactPCI StarFabric Specification has been submitted for final approval of the PICMG Executive Members. The PICMG 3.3 AdvanceTCA StarFabric Specification is under development.

StarFabric provides the ability to realize many switched interconnect benefits while maintaining 100% compatibility to all existing PCI interconnect software. No changes or additions to software (including operating system, BIOS, device drivers, or configuration code) are required to take advantage of the base scalability and reliability benefits of a switched interconnect. Utilizing the StarFabric Software Development Kit, system designers can easily build upon these base capabilities and leverage the advance features of the StarFabric technology including shortest path point-to-point connections, automatic path fail-over, efficient interrupt routing, Quality of Service (QoS), bandwidth allocation, and multicast routing.

The mission of the Trade Association is to own and manage StarFabric architecture specification, provide support for insuring interoperability, and promote the adoption of StarFabric technology. Members of the Trade Association are able to create interoperable switch, bridge, and other components to leverage existing StarFabric components and address new application markets. The Trade Association will guide the future enhancements of the StarFabric technology and ensure equal and unencumbered access to all interested companies.
